Author of "The Birth And Impact Of Britpop: Mis-Shapes, Scenesters And Insatiable Ones"
The front cover of “From Nothing To A Little Bit More” is a thing of great joy.
The usual enigmatic wonder we have come to expect from Brian Cannon of Microdot. A man who managed to make some of the most turgid moments in British pop music worth buying, simply so you could engage with his work.
Here we are confronted with a lonely highway, a hitchhiking child, and the most beautiful colour palette of deep greens, dark browns, midnight blues. We are forced to ask ourselves questions: who is the child, where does the road lead us, what storm in the Heavens is brewing.
The composition is unsettled a little by the presence of The Lathums logo in a too bright, nearly garish, yellow. It serves as a distraction from the beauty of the image that Cannon has crafted. Remove it and you are holding something quite beautiful in your hands, something worth looking at, something worth revisiting, something that moves you.
He’s a genius.
