Back on the 15th of September, London based indie-rock quintet The Horn brought forth their single ‘People Like Us’. Ahead of an anticipated album release in November of the same name – this musical movement signals exciting times for the five-piece as they bring out superb sounds while supporting Scouting For Girls on tour.
‘People Like Us’ is brilliant. From the start, there’s crystal clear vocals from lead singer Jonny Taylor – paired swimmingly with beautiful tones as part of a quadruple threat of soft keys, affirmative bass, and dovetailing guitar lines. As the song moves on with steady and rhythmic pace – soft keys transform from soft pillows of sound to shuddering electric bedrock that preempts the song’s euphoric peaks. The drums too, move with almost like a laidback smile, before stepping down into this regimented breakdown march.
Where instruments fluctuate to the song’s every effective whim, a constant is that aforementioned clear vocal. Taylor’s voice is sweet and melodic, yet cutting too – moving through and grounding the floating instruments, to channel them collectively into a shot of brightness. This injection comes as enough to brighten any dark day. Back up vocals arrive in parts as like a warm embrace to the lead output; and thus, highlights that unity isn’t lost within this five-strong group.
It seems that chemistry and unity has played a big part in getting the band to where they are now. Well, that and the sheer quality on display. Last year, The Horn released their debut EP, Do It Now, following a string of successful singles, which won the online admiration of Notion, Atwood Magazine and Louder Than War, as well as support from wider mainstream media ITV, BT Sport and Talksport. Key lyrics:
“Don’t you wanna fit in this messed up crazy world, ‘Cos I just wanna feel it before I leave this world.”
Speaking of the foundational moments behind their new single, The Horn’s Jonny Taylor recalls:
“The track started as a melody I was humming at my flat in Hackney. Then Nick, Danny and I developed it and Ed and Danny gave it washy Currents-esque synths (for fans of Tame Impala). We arranged a vocal breakdown and the chorus came straight together after Danton [Supple], our producer, visited us in Baker St studios; he said: ‘it needs a chorus.’ We took it into Rak studios and finished it off there later in the year…the song’s meaning is indicative of the inherent tension of wanting to be accepted by the world, but not wanting to conform for that reason alone.”
The Horn is made up of bassist and songwriter, Nick True, multi-instrumentalist Danny Monk, singer and guitarist Jonny Taylor, keyboardist Ed Cox and drummer Alex Moorse.
The Horn’s debut album People Like Us will be released on 3rd November 2023.
