The Islas give us an emotional ballad-esque tune in Last Time Forever, a tender and emotional song that shows a different side to the band that brought us previous single Close. Last Time Forever is perfect for this time of year - a familiar love song that has warmth. Best listened to when you’re half way through a bottle of Jack Daniels Honey on a dark, cold winter's night. A turning point for the band and our Single Of The Week. VIEW THE MUSIC VIDEO HERE.
In the week that your dear writer had the covid vaccine, it’s on to the rest of this week's tunes. The Tragic Magic EP is five songs by sad alternative folk outfit Night Bus Revival (brilliant name) .The sound here is gripping in its natural authenticity.in the vocals. Self reflective I suspect, the talent in the songwriting here is as good as it gets - experimental without going too far, The Tragic Magic EP is a breath of fresh air...One Cure For Man is the vehicle for James Parkinson, a singer songwriter who has been around for a while, making inoffensive guitar pop. Humble isn’t breaking any barriers in the genre but it’s as good as the genre gets - a catchy chorus “We can move on..” Humble is well worth a spin...Stargazer is the final track from the Vansleep EP You Should Have Said Something. It’s pretty dark really, starts off something like Nirvana’s Something In The Way in its brooding simplicity then morphs into a tune with soaring guitars and a big chorus..Did you know that The Vela Incident, also known as the South Atlantic Flash, was an unidentified double flash of light detected by an American Vela Hotel satellite on 22 September 1979 near the Prince Edward Islands in the Indian Ocean? Well you do now and it’s also the name of a cracking band from South Wales. Their new single Queen Of Liverpool is the sound of an assured outfit who have the knack of writing a belter. Opening with picked open chords, this has a throwback sound, almost Merseybeat, while keeping a contemporary indie rock n roll vibe. Some good melodies here...Radegunds are a four piece from Cambridge and new single How It Is has strong Arctic Monkey vibes in places but where this really shines is in the melody. It’s bright, catchy, and one of the stronger releases of the week..The Pavement influence is strong on Focus by Oya Paya, or Coffee & TV era Blur if you’re a bit younger. The trio have crafted something infectious here. That opening guitar sound and rhythm that plays through the verses is something special. Focus loses its er focus at the chorus but then all is redeemed when the now familiar sounding second verse hits...The Haciendas may be pests who can’t figure out how to send an email so it’s a good job they can put out a decent tune. It’s Not Too Late is a rock tune that ticks all the boxes - heavy riff in the chorus, a deep dark bass throughout and in your face guitars. It is refreshing to hear a song that has actual riffs. Definitely worth seeking out...Taking a breath and Keep A Moment by Circumnavigate is a soft and fluffy alt-rock dream of a tune. With beautifully layered vocals this is immersive..The Capollos are one of the most popular of the new wave of indie bands and there’s little doubt as to why - Telephone adds to their arsenal of quality songs...Serotones, a five piece band from York (who have twenty four hours to follow us back on Twitter before we unfollow) Ask Are You Listening? on their new release. Singing with a self assuredness that belies their age, I can imagine Serotones are blistering live. A diamond of a tune...The Dunts are scheduled to record their debut album next year and in the meantime they deliver a final gift to 2020 in new single Individuation. With a stabbing guitar at just the right places and drums that are as fast as you’ll hear on the chorus of an indie record, this is decent enough but I fear won’t be The Dunts finest moment...Recorded at the popular 7 West Studios in Glasgow, New Town round off this week's reviews with Beautiful Game. This is well crafted emotional pop. The songwriting and arrangement is a tried and tested formula - hey if it isn’t broke don’t try and fix it and all that I guess. Beautiful Game perhaps lacks an edge and is too polished and pop formulaic for my tastes but saying that, if that is your thing you won’t do better this week.
