Solo artist, Soda Cracker Jesus, who started to pursue a solo career as a way to challenge himself, has released his debut single.
On the track, titled ‘My Anthem’, the singer — formally known as Regan Lane—showcases his Pop-Punk inspiration and delivers a punky, energetic and driven sound that runs for less than 3 minutes.
The single is, in many ways, the culmination of Regan’s year thus far; he took on his new SCJ project in January after deciding to pursue a side-project separate from his band, Strangely Alright. The project allowed him to excel creatively and he is responsible for every sound you hear on the track.
Speaking about the motivation behind his project, Regan told Our Sound: “I think that life slowing to a crawl and the lack of interaction with other humans during Covid facilitated my wanting to just rock out, maybe to just get aggressive and physical for a couple of minutes.”
There is something very old-school and energetic about the track and, in terms of its influences, it showcases echoes of classic punk artists like The Sex Pistols and The Ramones while the vocal performance on the song is, at times, reminiscent of Marc Bolan.
“My Anthem is about getting out and being who I am supposed to be I guess … I want to have a clear mind and heart, I want to be comfortable enough in my own skin to be the real me.”
There is also an accompanying music video for the song, which further showcases Regan’s creativity and gives the song a further developed sense of energy.
Though Soda Cracker Jesus has been kept from being able to perform live, something about this debut seems to suggest he’d put on a good show.
