Taxi Rank - the five-piece from Swansea, South Wales, have released their second single of 2021 ‘A Piece Of You’. Following ‘Golden Days’, the summer anthem is the latest from the band’s upcoming EP, which is yet to be announced, but well worth keeping an eye out for if ‘A Piece Of You’ is anything to go by.
Speaking on the single, guitarist Matt Kivi said: “Although it’ll be our latest release, it was actually the first one to be written way back before lockdown even began - so we’ve been sitting on it for a while! The song's general theme is all about trying to relax and avoid taking my own issues out on other people, trying out a blank canvas and looking for inspiration from other people on how they do it.”
‘A Piece Of You’ is the upbeat, catchy track needed in your playlists for the summer, yet the lyrics manage to hold a deeper meaning. The music is infectious from the first listen, in particular the guitar solo before the final chorus – I just wish we heard more of it throughout the song. It’s clear the quintet are seasoned musicians - from the production, the lyrics and harmonies, it all gels together perfectly. My only critique is I’d like more of the grit heard on ‘Golden Days’, but it’s impressive that the band is exploring various sounds and I expect the upcoming EP will be a strong, varied body of work.
