London based Amie Jay has returned with her first single of 2021, ‘Unashamed’. The new track brings with it a new sound, a full 180 to anything she has produced before – a stark difference to the slowed, acoustic led music we’re used to hearing.
‘Unashamed’ still tackles the topic of heartbreak but unlike previously released material, Amie isn’t dwelling in sadness. She’s angry. This single fuses pop with electronic/punk influences - resulting in a punchy, upbeat yet darker sound that will have you listening to the track on repeat, thanks to the production work of Marble Empire.
In her lyrics, Amie has moved on from the grief stage of a breakup as she angrily asks: “how do you walk around each day so unashamed?” when she finds herself replaced. It’s a situation a lot of us can unfortunately relate to – a messy breakup and being deceived. Amie captures the vulnerability and emotions you go through perfectly as you’re feeling bitter but forced to get over it. Musically, the track is addictive. From the short build-up into the first chorus, the groovy guitar riffs carry the tempo alongside edgy drum beats that break into the rock/punk-driven chorus. It’s a sound you wouldn’t expect, but one I hope to hear more of.

With her debut EP on the horizon, set for release in early 2022, it appears we may be hearing a plethora of genres from Amie Jay or if ‘Unashamed’ is anything to go by - a darker, edgier sound. Either way, I’ll be eagerly waiting.
‘Unashamed’ is available now on major streaming platforms.
