Words: ROBIN MUMFORD
If John Bickel woke up one day as the Pied Piper, you can’t help but feel that the world would become full of dancing. London would become a colourful cabaret, the moods of people would be better, and overall, the sun would shine a lot brighter.
Why do I think this? you may ask. Well, having released his latest tune in early January, ‘Calling On Sunshine’ is carried by vibrantly soulful vocals, set to the definition of a finger-snapping groove, and anchored by a lyrical call for harmony. The newest addition to Bickel’s radiant collection is a stunning burst of perseverant joy.
Simply put, John Bickel is bound to bring a smile to your face, and his music is going to make you want to dance your way through the day. For those who are feeling down in the dumps, taking a leaf out of Philadelphia’s new talent’s book will go a long way.
Throughout the release, Bickel cites an eclectic range of retro influences, and many can be identified in the newest single; there are shades of Stevie Wonder’s soul and echoes of John Lennon’s energy. Sonically and lyrically, this is a trip straight to the mountaintop, and while Bickel is honest in reflecting on the step-by-step difficulty of the human experience, ‘Calling On Sunshine’ never comes back down - it simply enters a psychedelic groove and follows it home.
“The issues in the human condition need only light, clarity, truth and some honest communication to solve,” says Bickel. “I hoped to relay this message on a sailing groove.”
“Calling on Sunshine” is the first track released by John Bickel in 2022. It precedes a series of singles and a full album to be released later in the year.
