We recently had the opportunity to find out more about the talented Flavus Nova.
OSM: Your new single, ‘Illusion’ is out now. What was the general songwriting process and are there any interesting stories around the recording?
When I wrote Illusion, I created a chord progression first, then the melodies and finally wrote the lyrics last. I always find this approach to writing special, as it helps me get a feel for the song and inspires the songs topic. Yeah there is, there are so many versions of Illusion, that I have lost count now. I am such a perfectionist, I spent months re working the track, so much that the original sounds like a completely different song so its pretty funny when I re listen to this version.
OSM: From your point of view, what is the song about, what is its message?
The song depicts the struggle of being in a toxic relationship, and it reflects the ongoing battle someone may feel in this scenario. Its message is to raise awareness that staying in a toxic relationship should never ever be tolerated, under any circumstance.
OSM: What challenges have you faced since launching your career?
I think the biggest challenge I have faced currently is dealing with performance anxiety as this has gradually gotten worse since the pandemic. However I know that with time and more exposure, I will start to feel much more comfortable again.
OSM: Which other artists would you say you are influenced by?
I would say I am most influenced by The Cranberries, Paramore, Radiohead, P!nk, The Cardigans and Fleetwood Mac.
OSM: What are your plans for the year ahead?
My plan is to start gigging back home in Ireland as I have just finished my 3rd year of university in Birmingham. I also plan to release a lot of music and eventually an EP, I’m currently working on.
OSM: If you could change anything about the industry what would it be?
I would change the streaming income for artists cause this isn’t an ideal number for musicians to live off and its kinda sad that gigging is mainly the most attainable income.
OSM: If you could share the stage with another band or performer who would it be?
I would love to perform with Paramore, Gayle, P!nk or Radiohead, that would be so amazing.
OSM: What do you enjoy most about being a solo performer?
For me, I think it’s the creative control, and how therapeutic It feels to write in my own space without any distractions.
OSM: What songs are on your playlist right now, which songs are you into at the moment?
I have been listening to a lot of early 2000’s rock currently. So I would say ‘Paralyzer’ by Finger Eleven, ‘Fire Fire’ by Flyleaf and ‘No Fear’ by The Rasmus. Aside from that I have also been listening to ‘Do You Feel it’ by Chaos Chaos, it is such a good and relaxing tune, I usually listen to it when getting the bus.
