OSM: What inspired you to become a songwriter and musician?
I’ve always loved music, and ever since I could remember I’ve been coming up with melodies and lyrics for my own songs. When I began playing the piano, I was really drawn to coming up with my own songs, and it soon became my whole life.
OSM: Growing up, who were some of your main influences on your music?
I grew up with The Beatles and new wave music around the house. My family are huge music fans in general, so I think their love for music really influenced me. When I got a little older, I became obsessed with the band Radiohead, and that’s really when I started coming up with my own music.
OSM: Your new single, ‘The Gallows”’ is out now. What was the general songwriting process and are there any interesting stories around the recording?
I wrote this song on the sidewalk! I was walking home, and all of a sudden, a melody popped in my head! I basically ran from the street to my piano and wrote most of the song then and there. In the studio, my producer Mike came up with a great idea for the chorus, and that’s really when the song stuck for me.
OSM: From your point of view, what is the song about, what is its message?
The Gallows is a really personal song for me. I really related to the idea of being followed by “ghosts” of the people that used to be in my life. The lyrics of the song were literally all about what was happening then and there in my life. I was talking a walk in a park near my house, and I ran into my ex and his new girlfriend on the street. They basically took one glaring look at me and moved on with their day. Ugh, not even the decency of a hi! or how are you! It’s what I should’ve expected, but it honestly still hurt being ignored and glared at.
OSM: What challenges have you faced since launching your career?
I struggle a lot with anxiety and panic attacks, so putting myself out there is definitely a challenge.
OSM: What are your plans for the year ahead?
I’m going to be in my second year of university in the fall! This summer is all about working on my music, and I’m really excited about that.
OSM: If you could change anything about the industry what would it be?
I wish there was a way for smaller artists to get their names out there besides social media. I feel really intimidated by social media platforms, and everything like that, so I would definitely change the pressure that I feel.
OSM: If you could share the stage with another band or performer who would it be?
I feel like it would be a lot of fun to perform with Phoebe Bridgers!
OSM: What songs are on your playlist right now, which songs are you into at the moment?
I have some songs by Ashe, Wet Leg, Lucy Dacus, Eloise, and Harry Styles on repeat right now!
