Chart stalwarts of the last decade, Bastille have been experimenting and augmenting their sound since 2019’s ‘Doom Days’ album. Now, the four-piece add to last year’s ‘Goosebumps’ EP and number one album ‘Give Me The Future’ with ‘Remind Me’. Released on the 10th of June, it seems a perfect summer track that runs smoothly parallel with the rise in temperatures across the UK.
A breezy, sensual and yet deceptively contemplative slice of pop, ‘Remind Me’ demonstrates Bastille’s ability to craft infectious melodies and irresistible hooks. Built around sliding funk guitars and lead singer Dan Smith’s distinctive vocals, the track grows until it reaches a chorus filled with signature baroque vocal harmonies, ominous bass and consistent driving percussion. Amidst all this, Dan’s voice is inflicted by longing and heartbreak.
‘Remind Me’ actually began life in LA whilst the band were working with Rami Yacoub – from Swedish producer Max Martin’s production team MxM. Speaking about this latest release, Dan said:
“I started working on "Remind Me" a few years ago in LA with some writer friends at the very beginning of the “Give Me The Future” album process. We weren’t really sure what it would be for but always loved how different it felt. Finishing it off in London with Mark Crew and the rest of the guys we’d wanted to make something sharp and minimal. The lyrics are about how our minds can taunt us with memories that play uncontrollably like scenes on a loop, so we set the track over this hypnotic, rolling guitar riff. We invited a bunch of singers to lend their voices to the track.”
The aforementioned “bunch of singers” involved in the background vocals come from the band Fours and Zimbabwean-British singer Rationale. Talking of combining with other artists, the group have thrown themselves into co-writing for different people in recent years. Considering the new album, it is the first time that Bastille have left the door ajar for collaborators.
Featuring on ‘Give Me The Future’ are veritable members of pop royalty – Ryan Tedder (Adele, Taylor Swift) and Rami Yacoub (Britney Spears, Lady Gaga) as well as award-winning jack of all trades – Riz Ahmed.
Bastille have just completed an extensive UK arena tour and now the band are currently circumnavigating the US before returning to Europe and the UK this summer for a string of festival sets including Kendal Calling and Reading and Leeds Festival.
After ‘Give Me The Future’ left a string of positive reviews trailing in its wake, this new track intertwines with Bastille’s latest era perfectly.
