The indie-rock scene is very male dominant, and that was something that became a hot topic in the release of festival line-ups this summer. Questions flew around social media around why there were so many male headliners, but here at Our Sound Music, we know one thing is for sure, and that’s that it’s not because male artists are more talented. How can we be so sure? You may ask. Well, stick your earphones in and listen to Ezrae’s first ever release, that’ll be enough of an answer for you.
Heavily inspired by The 1975, Beabadoobee and female empowerment, Ezrae’s first release ‘My Oh My’ is the epitome of the perfect debut song. Given the impeccable flow of the song, it’s not too surprising to learn that the solo artist has been grafting a musical career since the age of eight, making music in her bedroom and singing to her parents.
‘My Oh My’ was recorded at the Song Lab in Birmingham and was produced and mixed by Johnny Amos. Talking about the release, Ezrae explains: “Truthfully I just wanted to make the most indirect song about a boy I fancied last year. I want him to listen to the song and for the story to sound familiar without him knowing that it’s about him. We were both too nervous to actually become anything more than friends but then he stabbed me in the back and ended up dating the girl who he promised me was “just a friend”. I didn’t want to sound sad in this song, instead I wanted to be as honest as I could because even though I’m so jealous of the girl he’s dating right now I dodged a bullet by not dating him because he’s a bit of a player.“
Despite being a love song, which comes with it the cliché of soppiness and overused singalong choruses, ‘My Oh My’ is a lot more than that. The mellow symphonies, entwined by her rich vocal skillset, is what drives this song into being one of the most listenable creations we have featured in a while.
And to add to the great first impressions we felt, Ezrae confessed that her debut single only took two hours to write before it got recorded, showing just how talented this up-and-coming artist is. Her voice is astonishing, and her musical lure is second to none, so we assure you that this isn’t the last you will hear from Ezrae.
'My Oh My' is out now on all major streaming platforms.
