Birmingham-based band Five O Fives release their new single ‘I Came Around’ – a great track that lines the four-piece up superbly for this year’s debut EP ‘Am I On My Own’.
This new one from the group of ’If You Won’t Say It’ and ‘Through The Darkness’ fame, attempts to capture the complicated mixture of loss and relief at the end of a relationship. This opening salvo from the upcoming EP sees the band “punch us in the gut with groove”. The song opens with a boisterous lead riff from Andreas Mouzourides, whose impeccable fuzz filled tone helps uniquely define the band.
Such an opening really grabs the listener by the scruff of the neck early doors and the addition of sharp and tight drums from Joel Faulkner produces a complementary pairing similar to that of Royal Blood. Soulful and charismatic lead singer Alice Bloor projects a clear and direct vocal while Nico Pickard’s bass is the final piece to the puzzle.
Oozing from every kick and snare in this track, is an attitude of indifference as Bloor croons “You’ve got attached and then distracted over nothing but a kiss”. The self-professed piece-de-resistance is an irresistibly singable chorus that is sure to get fans moving. The intensely catchy ostinato is sure to be rolling around your head for the rest of the day.
‘I Came Around’ is the first single release of 2022 by the alt rock quartet and clearly indicates how the collective have honed their sound. They’ve only released four tracks, yet if this one is anything to go by, the new EP scheduled for later in the year should be a good one as the band’s trajectory only looks skywards. Expect to hear more from this group, who have already started to build an audience with regular gigs and plays on the illustrious BBC Introducing.
